| Pogie
lived with a nice elderly man who developed Alzheimer ’s
disease. He didn’t know Pogie was sick, and the people
caring for him weren’t thinking about the dog.
When Sue, President of the Welfare for
Animals Guild (WAG), arrived at Pogie’s home he was
in very bad shape. He was blind, deaf, bald, listless and
had lost all the hair on his back and tail. Many of his
systems were failing due to an untreated illness called
Cushing’s Disease. He was in dire need of medical
care – The veterinarians donated their services. The
medicine alone was over $3,000. The local paper ran a story
about Pogie and readers responded by donating $2500 to help
cover the costs.
As Sue and her veterinarians worked with
Pogie, he regained most of his vision and hearing! He became
strong and happy. His listlessness and depression were replaced
by joy and playfulness. Of course he was very protective
of Sue whom he insisted on keeping nearby. Sue and WAG had
intended to find a home for Pogie as they had for dozens
of dogs they’d rescued. But Sue found she simply couldn’t
part with her constant companion. Pogie lived with Sue until
he succumbed to his Cushing's Disease two years later. |
